Limestone Organic Creamery

For younger Kingstonians, milk truck delivery is a foreign concept. For others, it will be a familiar blast from the past. For the Groenewegen family, it’s a way to pass the torch of farming from one generation to the next while rebuilding the local food system, keeping valuable farmland in working production, and saving on food miles and fossil fuels.
Francis and Kathie Groenewegen are second-generation farmers on their family’s 300-acre dairy farm about 10 minutes outside Kingston. With their two adult children, they milk almost three-dozen Holsteins and Jerseys on land that has been certified organic for a decade.
“We’re encouraging the third generation on this farm,” explains Kathie. “We started thinking about the creamery about five years ago. As our kids got older and decided they wanted to be in farming, we thought this would be a great way to expand the business and add value.”
The new creamery opened early this summer and products are available at over a dozen Kingston-area shops and restaurants, as well as at the farm store. The creamery products are all certified organic, including all percentages of milk — especially non-homogenized, “where cream rises to the top.” There are plans in the works to add butter and yogurt.
But what’s really about to turn heads is the affordable home-delivery service, via an old-fashioned milk truck.
“People can buy from the farm store, but if they want home delivery we’ll be serving the Kingston area,” says Kathie. “It’s a sustainable and environmentally friendly way to provide milk for the community. It will all be in glass bottles, reusable up to 20 times. And we provide porch boxes: an insulated, galvanized metal box to keep the milk or cheese cold for the day.”
Just like the olden days.
